About Factory of Days...
Factory of Days was recorded at Bel*Air Studios in Athens, GA, between December of 2005 and June of 2007. Working collabortively with engineer and co-producer Jason NeSmith (Casper & the Cookies), Mary O. set out to make a record that would showcase each song with arrangements to fit the song, free from the need to adhere to the continuity of a band's sound.
The core sound is established by Mary O.'s vocals, piano, and acoustic guitar, but many musicians shared their talents in making this record, most notably NeSmith on drums, and various guitar, bass, and keyboard tracks. Several other musicians joined in to flesh out the record, including Kay Stanton (Casper & the Cookies) on bass, Kyle Harris (the Diamond Center, ex-Sleepy Horses) on bass, and Mike Goldman (ex-Indicators, ex-Eyes) on mandolin and lap steel.
Mastered by Rodney Mills of Rodney Mills Masterhouse, Factory of Days was officially released by Two Sheds Music on May 20, 2008 and marks the label's 38th release.
Some history...
Mary O.'s music career began in 1999, when she and Jenny Hutton formed Charm School, a quartet that blended modern power pop wth old school new wave influences. Called one of Atlanta's best and often overlooked pop jewels (Creative Loafing, July 2004), the band's recorded output consisted of 2002's Career Day EP and 2004's Tomorrow Is Today. Both records were recorded by Jason NeSmith (Casper & the Cookies, ex-Of Montreal) at NeSmith's Bel*Air Studios in Athens.
Following the release of Tomorrow Is Today, Mary O. took her songwriting in a different direction and began working with NeSmith on a solo record in December 2005, which would eventually become Factory of Days.
Charm School played its last show in May 2006, and Mary O. then began assembling a band for live performances. At different times Mary O.'s live band has included Kim Ware (drums/vocals), Tom Branch (guitar), Michelle Friedman (bass/vocals/etc.), John McNicholas (guitar/vocals), McGregor Button (bass/keys), and Tracy Clark on backing vocals, bass, etc. Eric Young has also been known to sit in on drums from time to time. Currently most shows are played by Mary O., Tracy, and Mac.
